Uplifting, Homemade Lip Chap Recipe With Lavender & Lemon (2024)

This simple, homemade lip chap recipe is a great way to help boost your mood and nourish your lips. Whip up a batch to keep on hand or give them out to friends and teachers in spa baskets.

this …

Body butters and homemade lip chap were actually two of the first DIY products I ever made. They’re pretty much what started my journey to a holistic home and spiraled me into pretty much everything I do now!

And to this day, I still love making my own lip chaps (I actually make them as gifts for bridal and bachelorette parties!) and this chocolate one is one of my favorites.

One of the main reasons that I love making homemade lip chap is that I go through so many. I have one in the car, beside my bed, on my keys, and in the living room.

On top of that, my daughter has her own too! I sometimes wonder how it doesn’t drive my husband bonkers to have so many lying around.

Why You Should Make DIY Lip Chap

The reason I like making homemade lip chap is simply that I know what’s in it. The ingredients are natural, nourishing and health-promoting. You can check out where I buy my ingredients and my favorite brands here.

Nourishing Ingredients

The oils and butters in this homemade lip chap recipe are nourishing and healing. The beeswax helps keep it firm and provides a protective barrier on your lips from the elements.

Protection from the elements, especially in the winter is why I love having homemade body butter with beeswax on hand too!

And this tinted lip chap recipe is a nice way to feel a little extra "done up" without a lot of product!

Essential Oils

These specific lip chaps are scented with lemon and lavender. Mood elevating and slightly calming I think the scents work well together (learn more about lilac vs lavender as lilac is beautiful in this too and know that lavender can even be made into things like a lavender spritz co*cktail!).

And if you love lemon in this lip balm you'll love the refreshing flavor even more in something like gluten-free lemon cookies.

When possible, I like to use the actual item for scent. In this case, I zested lemon to infuse into the mixture in addition to adding the lemon essential oil.

You can also infuse actual lavender and let it heat slightly longer (this lavender water is a great way to use up the fresh flowers too).

Some essential oil brands are better than others. Personally, when I am using oil to heal I use a specific brand but when I’m just using it for scent, I don’t care as much.

Be wary of using too many drops of essential oils though as they're potent.

And because this homemade lip chap uses a citrus essential oil (lemon) be careful using it right before you're out in the sun. Citrus oils tend to attract the sun and can cause minor burns.

Storing It

When it comes to homemade lip balm, you can either make it and pour it into lip chap tubes or use tin and put it onto your lips with your finger.

personally, I always use tubes as getting oil on my fingers drives me nuts.

So long as you don't get water into the lip chap mixture (either from it boiling and splashing in when melting or in the tubes themselves), the homemade lip chaps will last a couple of months. I've actually hap lip chaps for over a year.

It's water that causes mold which obviously causes them to go bad so that's what you need to be cautious of.

DIY Not Your Thing?

I totally understand that not everyone is into the DIY thing. It may seem super complicated or you're just busy af (hello... mom life!). If that's the case, grab the creamsicle lip balm from Primally Pure.

It smells SO GOOD and Primally Pure uses only natural, chemical-free ingredients that I can legit pronounce. And fun fact: use code mamabear10 to save 10% on your ENTIRE order. Savings for the win!

How To Make The Lemon Lavender Lip Chap

Set up another heatproof jar and place a small mesh strainer on top. Pour the mixture through the strainer to remove the lemon zest.

After pouring, whisk in the essential oils and begin pouring into the lip chap containers immediately (using a small funnel makes it far easier).

Let sit on the counter for 24 hours to set.

Makes 8-10 depending on the size of lip chap tubes.
