It’s cold, it’s slushy, it’s refreshing – it’s my favorite frozen margarita recipe!

When it’s hot outside, and a regular co*cktail just won’t do, this frosty marg is a lifesaver. Made with only 4 ingredients, this recipe is a take on my classic margarita recipebut with a frozen twist! My favorite thing about these is that they’re easy to make and perfect for enjoying on hot summer days and fun weekends with friends.

Simply imagining myself relaxing in the shade with a frozen margarita in one hand and a good book in the other instantly lifts my mood! That’s how good they are.

Making this frozen margarita recipe is actually a huge step for me because I’m not usually a slushie person. Frozen and blended drinks have never been something I’ve craved.

Most of the time, frozen and blended co*cktails that I order at restaurants are too sweet for my liking, and I always end up throwing away half of the drink because it’s always served in a huge glass! Are those huge glasses really necessary? I don’t get it.

So I took it upon myself to make a frozen drink that isn’t too sweet, has the perfect amount of alcohol, and is refreshing. And I did it! Here’s how to make it.

How to Make Frozen Margaritas

  1. Place 1 cup tequila, 1 cup lime juice, 1/2 cup triple sec, 2 tablespoons agave syrup (or other sweetener), and 6 cups ice in a large blender.
  2. Blend until slushy and pour into 4 glasses.
  3. Serve immediately.

Isn’t that super easy? I like to think of this as the basic frozen margarita.

Once you’ve got this recipe, you can customize it to your liking and add any flavors that you want. Add frozen strawberries, mango slices, mixed berries, pineapple, anything! Just be sure to add them frozen so the drink keeps its slushy consistency.

Worst margarita I ever had. So bitter. Wasn’t enough ice either as it was runny. Going to stick with my usual 3:2:1 ratio on the spirits.

Hello! Thank you for the feedback and we’re sorry you didn’t enjoy this recipe. Some people enjoy their margaritas on the more bitter side, and others on the more sweet side. You can definitely add more agave or simple syrup and tweak the recipe until its to your liking.

I always tweak every recipe I come across, but I’m his is a very good base. Found it a bit weak, so I doubled the tequila and lime juice and added more agave than it asked for. That much ice makes it too watered down without. Also added a full tangelo worth of juice because I needed to get rid of it. If I didn’t have the tangelo, I would have added more triple sec. All in all… So yum.

This may be a dumb question, but how you measure a cup of ice

Hi Bennet. No worries, it’s not a dumb question! We recommend using a 1 cup measuring cup and scooping the ice into it. I hope this helps!

FAQs

What is the secret ingredient in margaritas? ›

We'll just tell you upfront: The secret to a tasty margarita is freshly squeezed lime juice (not the bottled stuff) and—here's the real secret—a splash of fresh OJ. That's right. Fresh-squeezed juice from an actual orange (not an orange-flavored liqueur) will produce a cleaner-tasting, more refreshing margarita.

What is the story of the frozen margarita? ›

Mariano Martinez (born 1944) is an American inventor, entrepreneur, restaurateur, and creative artist. In Dallas, Texas, in 1971, he adapted a slurpee machine to making margaritas and dubbed it "The World's First Frozen Margarita Machine".

Do you get more alcohol in a frozen or on the rocks margarita? ›

The type of orange liqueur used: Triple sec contains fewer calories and less alcohol than other types of orange liqueur. Whether the margarita is frozen or on the rocks: A frozen margarita contains more calories and alcohol than a non-frozen margarita.

What is the difference between a margarita and a frozen margarita? ›

A margarita on the rocks certainly has its share of ice in it, but it's not spread nearly as evenly throughout as it is in a frozen drink. Your frozen concoction maker shaves ice into the perfect size then blends it into the rest of the drink so that every sip is as cold as can be. Make sure you choose blended drinks.

Why is it called a dirty margarita? ›

The dirty margarita takes its inspiration from the dirty martini, a classic libation made with strong liquor and a splash of a little something not-so-clear. We swap olive juice for jalapeno brine, making this a drink that packs the heat–and a punch.

Why do you put triple sec in margaritas? ›

Traditionally, orange has always been a classic pairing for any agave-based spirit, providing a sweeter complement without overpowering the notes of the agave. In Margaritas, the inclusion of triple sec provides a luscious, warm citric note that counterbalances the lime juice's high acidity.

Is a margarita a day bad for you? ›

Remember that all foods and drinks, including margaritas, are OK in limited amounts. One day of too much sugar won't cancel out an otherwise healthy diet.

How do you make a frozen margarita without separating it? ›

Xanthan gum, this is an emulsifier and stabilizer. It's what the big coffee chains use in their frozen drinks to keep them from separating as they melt.

What is the best ice for margaritas? ›

Ghost Blanco, Tequila Ocho Plata, and Laneta Blanco are among the best tequilas for margaritas.

Do you put frozen margaritas in the freezer or fridge? ›

The "Original Margarita" recipe, as given by Cointreau on their website, has slightly more of their own sweet liqueur: 1 part white tequila, 1⁄2 part Cointreau, and 1⁄2 part fresh squeezed lime juice.

What to add to margarita mix to make it better? ›
