Synopsis

A science-fiction fantasy based loosely on the classical Japanese Noh theatre drama Adachi-ga Hara about the demon Onibaba, of which lyrical extracts are quoted at intermission-like intervals throughout the film. The plot centres on a journey made by a space pilot named Yūkei who arrives at a planet upon which a murderous "witch" is said to reside.

Osamu Tezuka's "Lion Books" series, written for magazines first for a period through the late 50s and then resumed during the early 70s, contain series of tales that operate like small filmic vignettes - self-contained, but incredibly bountiful in thematic and emotional depth. He reached the pinnacle (I believe) of this type of manga storytelling with "Kuuki no Soko" ("Under the Air"), written from 1968-70. Essentially what these books are are the purest way to grasp Tezuka's absolute mastery of storytelling at the start of the 1970s: through these singular narratives he wastes no time in establishing setting, character, and mood through a clear (though often wordy) exposition, then tells a simple tale over 20 to 30 pages, often finishing…

“It seemed so easy for so many people to divide war from peace, to confine their definitions to the unambivalent. Marching soldiers, pitched battles and slaughter. Locked armouries, treaties, fêtes and city gates opened wide. But Fiddler knew that suffering thrived in both realms of existence – he'd witnessed too many faces of the poor, ancient crones and babes in a mother's arms, figures lying motionless on the roadside or in the gutters of streets – where the sewage flowed unceasing like rivers gathering their spent souls.

The truth in his heart was this: he no longer believed in peace.”

I was lightly browsing through Archive.org's many anime uploads and picked a few at random. Was deeply surprised and moved by this 30 minute banger. Finding new things is the best.
